The online demonstration classes make headway

During the epidemic prevention and containment on campus, to showcase the leading models of the faculty members engaging in the virtual teaching activities, and to build up a platform for academic exchange and communication, the AXHU Department for Teaching Affairs hosted a school-wide online teaching demonstration in the eighth week of the spring semester of 2022.

Via the grassroots election of each school or teaching unit and the recommendation of the Department for Teaching Affairs, the 16 online classes are shortlisted to livestream for all the faculty, students and staff at AXHU. Subsequently, the relevant teaching units convene faculty members to observe the virtual teaching activities in an orderly way and record down the details of each demonstration class.

In these demonstration classes, the faculty members fully apply the digital powerhouse of Rain Classroom and Tencent of China, and explore some new online teaching modes. With IT or VR support, the merits and potentials of these virtual classes, to some degree, outmatch the teaching achievements which physical classes can bring about. Under the backdrop, the students are really positioned at the “heartland” and see their own increasing capability. Obviously, the real-time interactions between teacher and student via “pop-up windows” on the computer screen can grace the stereotype of the duck-feeding style and make the online teaching and learning become more vivid and vibrant.

After the observation of the online teaching, the faculty members with every teaching unit, via video link, discussed and concluded their own evaluations of each teaching event. Not only do they present their individual “likes”, but also they frankly point out the existing “flaws” needed to be polished at once. Afterwards, based on the observers’ evaluations and judgement, these teachers lecturing the demonstration classes respectively give their feedback and reshape to have a new vision of how the virtual teaching could be more efficient and fruitful.

At a pandemic-affected situation, this online teaching and observing activity launched by AXHU administration demonstrated that the school will resolutely adhere to the preorientation of the student-centered pedagogical philosophy, and forge a solid superstructure based upon lofty ideas and perseverance to brave any difficulties and challenges. Resorting to the plentiful education resources of AXHU, humanistic education for students’ all-around development will be placed at the top agenda. This online event has successfully constructed a virtual platform, on which the faculty and staff can communicate and exchange their opinions and reflection, so as to find out some efficient approaches to crank up their online teaching activities.
