A Melody by AXHU School of Pharmacy Youth:

Celebrating Rural Rejuvenation, commemorating “Red Journey”

To put in place the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Communist Youth League (CYL) organization residing on university campus should act as a leading role, fully inspiring more and more young people to learn by doing in the real word, to throw themselves into building a great socialist country with Chinese characteristics, and to tenaciously achieve the splendid communism of humanity from around the world.

Referring to the current societal needs, to put the Ideological-Political Education of higher education into a bigger picture can significantly pioneer, instruct and support the college students to expand knowledge, enhance competence and generate contributions, themselves.

From Jun 26-30, 2023, the “Fieldwork Group” of AXHU School of Pharmacy (hereinafter Group) embarked on a theme programme—Powering Rural Rejuvenation, Tracing “Red Journey”—at a provincial-level exemplary community, Junzhang Village, Lucun township, Jieshou, Anhui province, which will center around a four-pronged summer activity named “San Xia Xiang*” involving “Rural Development,” “Growing Herbal Medicine,” “Medical Care & Hygiene,” “Tracing ‘Red Footprints’,” through which to write a new chapter for public welfare at AXHU community.

*San Xia Xiang: The summer program of social practices for the college student volunteers from the universities, junior colleges or polytechnics—serving the local residents by disseminating the general knowledge in culture, science and technology, and hygiene in rural areas.

To be honed with field trips and grass-roots work in rural areas

As scheduled, the group members arrived at Junzhang Village on the morning of Jun 27. The relevant officials with Junzhang Village committee enthusiastically greeted the students, faculty and staff at the Party-Masses Service Center of Lucun township. The two parties conferred with the concrete cooperative items on agenda, and the Village clerk introduces the local developmental environment, potentials and challenges in the recent years.

After that, the Group led by Junzhang Village CPC secretary HUANG Laibing headed for Guozhai community (a ‘natural village’ affiliated to the jurisdictions of Lucun Town People’s Government) and conducted field survey in the much broader areas, covering rural infrastructures, rural civilization construction, Interplanting-in-Forests economy, industries’ potentials and evolution, during which they collect lots first-hand data with their cameras snapshotting and filming the local humanities and culture and agricultural facilities around the local communities, and write down and archive their histories and achievements with pen & paper via interviewing the cadres and officials in the village.

After visiting the local villagers’ homes from door to door, everyone has a deeper personal experience and feelings that all the local residents are enjoying moderately prosperous lives, who have been well equipped with living and family-friendly facilities and have equally access to learning resources and developmental opportunities. As a provincial-level exemplary village, which effectively adopts a raft of measures to drive its rural economic and civilization construction, comprising “Five Gardens” (Vegetable Garden, Herbal Medicine Plot, Flower Bed, Bamboo Grove and Orchard), “Making Our Village Become Beautiful,” “Voices from Villagers,” “Renovation Actions,” and much more.

On the afternoon of Jun 28, to advance the collective economy and rural rejuvenation in all aspects, the Group paid a visit to the “Jie Zhi Xiang” sesame oil mill, where a technician tells its tradition and evolution, producing skills, making flow, selling points in market, brand promotion and so on. As known, every household has inherited such old traditional craftsmanship and passed down generation by generation, with which they have further imported the collective economic pattern into all-through sesame oil production, transformed internal industrial structure and regime, and realized its mechanized, professional, large-scale operations, which is engineering a rapid evolution of rural rejuvenation.     

To thrive countrysides through growing herbal medicines

On the morning of Jun 28, the village cadres assisted the Group to conduct a field trip at the Chinese Herbal Medicine Planting Base. Interested in the local labor forces and natural resources ecologically supporting the inter-planting in forests, the Group members, through scientific observation and studies, recommended a trial programme of planting Herba Leonuri and Pinellia ternata in bungei forests, and scientifically demonstrated their botanical familia, seasonal periodicity growth, pharmaceutical value, and more (with which to erect billboards for the “popularization of science” beside the experimental fields).

[First off, they also break ground for another two experimental patches in paired samples. And AXHU faculty member Ma Xiaojin addresses a lecture of the herbal characteristics, medical values and planting skills on the site. Through shifting from classroom teaching to the unlimited field work while transforming those theoretical contents into practical applications in service of positive change, the team work goes off friendly, orderly and effectively, such as plowing, seeding, earthing and irrigating.]

To provide medical services for public health and hygiene

On the morning of Jun 29, vice secretary of the CPC Luchun Town Committee YANG Zhaobo briefs the basic information of medical service and health care for the local residents, and then these group members “play in ensemble” at Junzhang Village Party-Masses Service Center, involving the regular physical examinations of measuring height, weight, blood pressure and pulse...(through which the villagers’ health data and information have been recorded and filed to the local government); propaganda in food and drug safety (during which the members deliver the Health Knowledge Poster to the local families, and help them mark some medication guidance as needed on medicine packaging, as well as check and filter those expired drugs left in medicine chest at home); fitness training (e.g. “Five-Animal Exercises” created by Hua Tuo, China, Eastern Han Dynasty) [which acts as one of the co-curriculum programs of AXHU community, aiming to establish a wider platform to give full scope to the Chinese humanities and tradition in “Health and Fitness”]. At last, the Group present the villagers with their self-made Chinese herbal sachets.

To communicate “Red Culture,” commemorate “Red Journey”

On the afternoon of Jun 29, the Group launched a theme activity of “Red Culture and Red Journey” at Jieshoushi Museum. Guided by a docent in the museum, every group member enjoys a profound experience in quieter moments and has an opportunity of deeply exploring the Red Culture historically created by the local communities (which is followed by a group discussion, Q & A, and the Learning about its relevant historical materials in written forms or on video programme).

And all members hold an oath-taking ceremony in front of the portrait of QIAO Daosan, a great communist practitioner and outstanding CPC member, for pledging the CPC discipline, commemorating the martyrs and learning from their eternal aspiration and greatest deeds and unrelentingly revolutionary spirit. In the end, they sincerely express their hopes and ambitions of “ We will stay true to the Party’s original aspiration and the founding mission, and will devote ourselves to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation in a new era and to the Chinese Dream in the near future.   

The “San Xia Xiang” initiative is a not unusual action of continuing learning and practice to surface the glory traditions originated from the May Fourth Movement (China, May 4, 1919), but sets an extraordinary path leading a wider range of young college students “To be best engaged with our neighborhood, to realize their own life values, to establish a solid bond with the masses, and to co-shoulder the Chinese national mission and future.”

The School of Pharmacy young students have always been foraging, working and thinking in AXHU “pollinator” community and beyond, combining the theoretical learning and research in the study room with much more transformational, innovative practices in a living world, co-building “Beauty Countrysides” shoulder to shoulder with the masses, doing their part to the thrilling cause of “Rural Rejuvenation” with their talents and sweats and courage.

Consequently, they have a deeper understanding of the factual needs in every residency and the real-time undertakings happening in each geo-culture, and will have been endowed with the professional abilities of excellence in actions and the social comprehensive competence in service to public welfare.
