 AXHU’s New Generations in the Age of AI

Paradoxically! How to describe such a great guy in words? Notwithstanding,“shyness but boldness, ordinariness but excellence, slothfulness in leisure time but mole-like hustling in lab...”

DAI Weilong, a current undergraduate majoring in Computer Science & Technology, C’25, of AXHU School of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, is a zestful boy, AXHU-wide Straight-A student [Superlearner学霸], and also recipient of 2023 Chinese Government Scholarship, of whom all the inclinations will be framing with data sets in the digitally-generated time and space.

Superlearner in low profile

Being dressed up inconspicuously with facial mask, dark-green jacket, and a pair of spectacles with black and white rims, as for his every course score remaining on the top list, especially for the C Language grading at 99 (hundred-point system), the starry student of unusual distinction responds in nervously trembling voice, slapping his forehead, while interviewing this time. “Luckily, comparatively and acceptably, which is factually a must-do penetration upon linking to sorts of evolving insights into today’s general AI realm.” In discussing the future computer science, his look is sharply taking on an air of confidence and eagerness, but kinds of obsessiveness and even stubbornness.

“Are you hurrying for lab center? How about your last contests? Are your score still ranking 1st of the [something] academic course this term? Are you gearing up for the other discipline events?... You win awards again!” some insiders come across, extending the often-repeated greetings to him.

At this School, “DAI Weilong” is very popular, award-winning academic pacesetter—nothing but the apple of the fellows’ eyes—, obtaining the Level-1 accreditation at the 6th “LOONGSON Cup” National College Students Competition for Computer System Ability Training (sponsored by China Internet Development Foundation), second prize of Anhui Robot Competition (Single-chip Computers and Embedded System), first prize of the 2nd AXHU System Capacities Competition (2022), and third prize of the 3rd AXHU Certificates-Accessing Knowledge Contests (or AXHU Certificates-Accessing Counselling Days).

To make empirical research with a sentiment of medieval knight

The mighty mountain peaks towering

at the far side of meadows;

The silver moonlights flooding through

under the vault of heavens;

The chivalrous warrior in scarlet robes,

galloping his battle steed,

is on a sacred errand.

—“ 追风赶月莫停留,平芜尽处是春山。”

After the comprehensive assessment and screening tests for the School’s candidates pool, Dai was accredited as its leader to conduct the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-backed programme. In the summer of 2022, most of his fellows are heartily enjoying such a long-awaited summer break off campus, but he bucks up, shifting from lab, canteen to dormitory, and dives into its design and development at AXHU research center, day and night. The monotonous, tedious work-and-life pattern set out from the end of June through the beginning of August. Yet despite its error-prone tasks of tasks of tasks like being in online gaming, just a project-wide experiment is fielded on CPU, which will average four hours for a trail run/experimentation, but often and often falls by the way.

Seemingly, he has very always been mulling (in a bulk of data) over of what the unseen “rivals” [disinformation/bugs/viruses] have had existed in vexations or would have happened in the “fictive” world. Personally, the relevant experiments and disciplinary competition are like PK (player killing) among the monsters rising one after another in the World of Warcraft. Suggestively, he was literarily textured with both a knight venturing his life against the vampires in Gothic castles and the Chinese kung-fu 功夫legends about those unrivaled martial masters of errantry spirit galloping across the Jianghu 江湖 to fight a mob of villains, pantisocratically. “Of the computation science, while configuring [hardware] and programming & testing [software], a reasonable algorithm or high-efficient debugging will bring me a tasteful enjoyment and real fulfillment,” Dai excitedly says.

However, “I’m not good at competing in volleyball on court, which is far different from the initiative, creative work on computer in laboratory,” Dai argues. “But self-education is important for the sake of modifying individual behaviour pattern.” Later, Dai not only develops his athletic performance via volleyball online course and a great deal of training for technical and physical skills, but shapes an optimistic and proactive mindset in the face of pressure and difficulties. “Nevertheless, the nitty-gritty of questions and problems on a timeline will never diminish and disappear yet, themselves. I need a nap and meal to recover and refresh, and then continue to battle the “rivals” on the field.”

Data-Smart New Youth

By accident, catching sight of a silvery USB Flash Disk [learning software, research reports, and programming files] and campus card cover (printed with “新青年”—New Youth) hung on his knapsack, we ask, “In your eyes, how to define today’s ‘New Youth’? And what about your career in the near future?”

DAI returns, “In my view, all the people shall make breakthroughs and innovations; some of them can be still on the top in her or his own general academic field(s). As for my future career, the master’s program in computer science is only the apply of my eyes, by which to enhance personal comprehensive capacities, alongside the rapid changes in AI technology on the forefronts, so as to make more generative contributions to social development in all aspects.”

In the purposeful career and everyday campus life, he, as a member of the New Youth, has always been ready to generously help more and more people around to solve their unsolved problems and the known unknowns. “If wanted, I will ever be beside you.” During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, he acted as a dedicated “errand-boy” to deliver medicine and food at the student buildings [lockdown policy]. DAI Weilong is a starry learner, an optimist, a warm-hearted big boy, and an exemplary model of AXHU’s new generation.
