Introduction to AXHU Gen Ed Department
Founded in Nov 2016, the predecessor of the Gen Ed Department is the AXHU Courses Commons, which mainly undertakes the sports-related subjects and the general studies offerings based on AXHU programs.
Today, it continually conducts the athletic training and coaching for sport teams or clubs at campus community, teaching engagement of selective course units, and groundbreaking research of career interests at the frontier as well (incl. Mathematics, Physics and other common courses as required for AXHU undergraduates or three-year college students).
Till now, this department has staffed a 98-member innovation team with strong performance, which comprises 39 professorships (6 full professors and 1 senior engineer), 11 lectures, 85 master or doctoral graduates from Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei University of Technology, Beijing Sport University, Shanghai University of Sport, Xi’an Physical Education University, Wuhan Sports University, etc., as evidenced by high-level education background, high-quality faculty commitments, lofty professional mission, as well as geographically rich experience and culture varied from Chinese higher education disciplinary distributions across the country.
Over the past years, the thrilling outcomes of teaching and academic research at the different levels, including over 30 papers (or monographs) and 7 projects in 2012; over 39 papers (or monographs) and 11 projects in 2013; 44 papers and 20 projects in 2014; 53 papers and 15 projects in 2015; 46 papers and 17 projects in 2016; 51 papers and 18 projects in 2017; 44 papers and 20 projects in 2018; 54 papers and 15 projects in 2019; 47 papers and 21 projects in 2020; 35 papers and 17 projects in 2021; 26 papers and 21 projects in 2022.
Meanwhile, many of the faculty members as head coach or counsellor help AXHU’s student-teams to earn a wide array of awards (3 in 2015, 16 in 2016, 28 in 2017, 25 in 2018, 49 in 2019, 20 in 2020, 30 in 2021, and 30 in 2022) at the provincial- or national-level competition and games, such as Roller Skating (hockey), Aerobics, Cheerleading, Taekwondo, Wushu (Chinese martial arts), Street Dance, Dancesport, Gobang, and more.
In particular, some outstanding members of AXHU Roller Skating club were selected to the Chinese national team for the Rink Hockey Asian Championship in South Korea and the Rink Hockey World Championship in Italy. Also, some delegates debut and make historical breakthroughs in the competition of Yoga and Dragon Boat Race. [due to COVID pandemic, some sports events have been canceled and postponed]
Since the founding of the Department, under the correct guidance of AXHU leaderships, its faculty members have proactively carried out self-improvement activities and high-trust practices with an idea of “Professional Profile + Individual Quality”. On average, their capacities and achievements of teaching and career goals are obviously enhanced in recent years, which are highly recognized by the AXHU administration and a large majority of the undergraduate students across all areas.
According to AXHU’s initiative “Building the Local High-level Applied University,” the Department focuses on not only its everyday teaching practices, but the time-tested reform in probing relevant issues of how to work out disciplinary construction and innovative changes-and how to drive holistic teaching and research to the next level.

Sections for Teaching
Sports Management Center for Roller Ice Hockey
Having 4 tenured and 5 adjunct faculty members (of whom, 1 national coach, 2 senior coaches, 1 national referee, and 1 national Level-1 referee), comprising Teaching Group, Competition Group and Support Group, the Center is and will be responsible for the PE teaching, everyday management of the students’ Sports Club and Association, preparations for the competition of a kind, and coaching and training for sports programs, such as Ice Hockey, Inline Skating Hockey, Quad Skating Hockey, Freestyle Roller Skating, Speed Roller Skating, Roller Derby, Skateboard, Floorball, Freeline Skates, and more. Till now, it has equipped several student-athletes of excellence for national ice hockey team and national inline skating hockey team.
With 10-year development, the AXHU Roller Ice Hockey Team has achieved lots of awards and accolades including 3 medals of international sports events, 10 at national-level and 20 provincial-level competition, which is honored with the “China’s Model School for Roller Skating” and “Anhui Provincial Demo Base for Skating Hockey”.
Institute for Teaching and Research of PE
The Institute includes Ball Group, Dance Group, and Wushu Group. Starting from Sep 2006, it began to deliver the teaching and training reform in 16 PE-specific courses, including Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Wushu forms, Tai Chi, Taekwondo, Aerobics, Aerobic Latin, Dancesport, Figure Training.
In 2008, responding to the call of “Opinions on PE & Arts Clubs-based Teaching Reform at Anhui-wide High Education Institutes” released by Anhui Provincial Education Department and promoting the undergraduate students’ all-rounded development, it, adhering to the guideline of “To Shape College Student’s Mindset with Health First and Lifetime Fitness,” works out the relevant reform for teaching offered to the classes of 2022 and establishes 21 clubs over time. With the continuing improvement of AXHU’s education level, which will thoughtfully increase more favorite sports courses or athletic activities to meet the current students’ interests in the new era.
To make the guidelines such as Provisions on AXHU PE Teaching, Standards of National Physical Exercises, National Fitness Programme situated at school, this grassroots organization has been always engaged with PE-related teaching and large-scale events or students competition of kinds at the different levels.
Currently, it boasts a young, vigorous, professionalized and innovative team, aged 35.6 on average, including 22 tenured and 3 adjunct faculty members and 1 manager of sports facilities; 23 recipients of master’s degree; 14 associate professors and 3 lecturers, who mostly graduated from the China’s leading sports universities such as Beijing Sport University, Xi’an Physical Education University, Chengdu Sport University, Wuhan Sports University.
Institute for Teaching and Research of Mathematics
The Institute works out the AXHU-wide teaching tasks and assignments for the undergraduate students in Economics and Sciences & Engineering, including compulsory courses such as Advanced Mathematics A, Advanced Mathematics B, Advanced Mathematics C, Linear Algebra, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Applied Economic Mathematics, as well as the selective course Mathematical Modeling.
In all, it has become a high-level, energetic, promising faculty team of excellence (aged 37.4 on average), which has 30 tenured and 2 adjunct faculty members, 26 recipients of master’s degree, and 3 full professors, 13 associate professors, 1 senior engineer and 6 lecturers.
Through the down-to-earth teaching and instruction, it aims to help the students master the necessary fundamentals of advanced mathematics and oft-applied solutions, and to improve the students’ comprehensive capacities of putting their knowledge into analyzing and coping with practical problems in the real world.
Institute for Teaching and Research of Physics
Founded in Nov 2013, it is mostly in charge of teaching the content courses such as College Physics and Experimental Physics to the undergraduate students in sciences and engineering or pharmacy.
Today, it has 7 faculty members in all, including 4 doctorates, 2 masters, 2 full professors, and 2 lecturers, who aged 38.2 on average.
Via many years’ teaching practices conducted by the dedicated ones, it has a profound accumulation of teaching experiences and continued impacts as well as has achieved lots of shining achievements. Nowadays, the College Physics has been granted AXHU-wide Feature Course. To guide the effects of theoretical teaching, it expands its work in the area of experimental transformation, with which the book College Physics Experiment written by faculty member named LIU Daojun was published in 2010. In recent years, AXHU increases investment in its comprehensive construction regarding experimental teaching facilities and has built 10 Physics Labs, which can house 16 experiment projects at the same time, and its application rate is up 100%.
In the trending situations, this sector will follow up with the solid directions of Xinhua Group, AXHU and Gen Ed department, adopt some brand new concepts and innovative teaching methods, and beef up the academic staff in the field, so as to construct a top-performing institute to make a difference.
Faculty and Staff
Till now, the Gen Ed Dept has had 98 tenured and 40 adjunct members, including 9 doctorates (6.5%) and 116 masters (84.1%); 65 full or associate professors and 1 senior engineer and 1 senior lecture (47.1%) and 23 lecturers (16.7%). Comparatively, it is a younger work team, who aged 39.2 on average, including 55 members below 35 (39.8%); 52 members of 35-45 (37.8%); 31 members above 45 (22.4%).
Particularly, the majority of the faculty and staff graduated from the China’s renowned universities such as Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Hefei University of Technology, Anhui University, Anhui Jianzhu University, Beijing Sport University, Shanghai University of Sport, and Xi’an Physical Education University, and more.

WANG Shizhao
Wang Shizhao, male, full professor, born in 1976, a native of Anhui Fengyang county, received his bachelor’ degree of physical education at Anhui Normal University in 2000 and his master’s degree at Nanjing Sport Institute in 2014, and was awarded the “AXHU Advanced Staff,” respectively, in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Moreover, he was conferred “Xinhua Group Outstanding Staff” in 2003; “AXHU Excellent Teacher” in 2005, and “Anhui Provincial Model Teacher” in 2014; the member of Experts Tank at the Assessment Center of Anhui Provincial Education Department in 2015.
The academic achievements of his include: more than 10 papers, 1 monograph (co-author), 1 Anhui Provincial Quality Engineering Program (2014jyxm413), 1 Anhui Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Planning Program (AHSKQ2014D88), 1 key project of Anhui Provincial Sports Bureau (ASS2013136), as well as a number of AXHU-wide projects of teaching and research. Especially, the project College Sports Club-based Teaching and Applications won a third prize of Anhui Provincial Teaching Achievements Awards in 2008, and the student delegates earned the second and fifth prize at 2014 China University Students Taekwondo Championships (mentor).
CHU Zhengqing
CHU Zhengqing, full professor, master, member of Anhui Provincial Mathematical Modeling Assessment Panel, AXHU Mathematical Modeling Group coach-in-chief, was born in Mar 1984. The achievements of teaching as a mentor include 1 first prize at China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling; 1 first prize, 4 second prizes, 2 third prizes at Anhui Provincial Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling; and 1 second prize at Anhui Provincial Market Survey and Analysis Competition for College Students. And Chu works as the core member and earns 3 prizes at AXHU-wide Teaching Achievements Awards, and receives 1 third prize at Anhui Provincial Teaching Achievements Awards. Moreover, he has written and published more than 10 papers.
ZUO Xuewu
Zuo Xuewu, associate professor, deputy director of the AXHU Mathematics Institute, a native of Lujiang county, Anhui Province, received his engineering master’s degree at Hefei University of Technology in 2015, and teaches content course Advanced Mathematics to the undergraduate students. YANG Yusheng, male, full professor, born in 1962 in Shanghai, graduated from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1985. Currently, he serves as a faculty member of mathematics at Gen Ed Department and the guest supervisor of USTC doctoral programs. Since taking office at AXHU, Yang has been diligently and conscientiously engaged with disciplinary research and dedicated to the great cause of the private universities of China, earning many prizes of Mathematics competition for Chinese College Students (mentor), and teaches the content courses to the undergraduate students including Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Complex Function and Integral Transform, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Real Variable Function, Functional Analysis, Modern Analysis Techniques, Advanced Real Analysis.
ZHANG Ji
ZHANG Ji,—Be Resolute & Act Out—, full professor, disciplinary leader of the Gen Ed Department, born in Guan of Hebei province in 1978, obtained the master’s degree of Optics at Jiangxi Normal University in 2007. And Zhang was admitted to studying the doctoral program at Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2011, and meanwhile, taught the content courses to undergraduate students such as College Physics, Experimental Physics. SUN Duoru, male, associate professor, born in 1966, a native of Fengyang county, Anhui province, graduated from East China Normal University’s Department of Mathematics and is now serving as a Mathematics teacher to teach the content courses to undergraduate students, including Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Functions of Complex Variables and Integral Transformation.

NIE Dongming, associate professor, AXHU Young Skeleton Teacher, born in 1981, a native of Nanyang City, Henan province, received the master’s degree in Fundamental Mathematics from Nanjing Normal University, and now teaches content courses to the undergraduate students including Advanced Mathematics, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Functions of Complex Variables and Integral Transformation. SHEN Yanping
SHEN Yanping, —Both Diligence and Attitude Bring about Excellent Performance in Work Field—, associate professor, CPC member, born in 1980, a native of Hefei City, Anhui province, received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Chengdu Sport University in 2003 and his master’s degree in Sport Science from Zhejiang University in 2014. At AXHU, Shen teaches PE-related courses to undergraduate students such as Public Wellness Education and Soccer, and his achievements of teaching and research include: Ranking 4th at Anhui Qualifier for 2005 China University Football League (AXHU Men’s Soccer Team head coach), top rankings by teaching capacities based on AXHU online academic assessment system, a number of papers of teaching and research, 1 project of provincial-level scientific research programme (director).
